National sporting achievement via BWF

External timber cladding and internal lining materials, both supplied and installed by a member of the British Woodworking Federation, are performing well at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

The indoor sports arena, funded by Sport England was officially opened earlier this year to provide facilities for UK's elite athletes and the wider community. Built by Interserve Project Services Ltd, the Joinery Subcontractor on the project being BWF member SHN Joinery Ltd of Featherstone.

The West Yorkshire company worked closely with Interserve and the other contractors over a six month period, providing all of its own access platforms and site safety equipment.

SHN's £750,000 contract saw its teams of well trained operatives install more than 1200 square metres of cedar boarding, with the 150 mm wide, tongue and groove matchboard secured to treated timber battens, fixed back to steel cladding rails.

Inside the building the specification switched to high performance board products to line the walls, with Formica faced panels being employed at lower levels to resist the impact damage of activities like basketball. Higher up or in areas not expected to suffer heavy usage, SHN's team were required to fit MDF or veneer paneling of 5000 square metres.

The Divisional Director for Interserve, Mr Chris Hale, comments: "SHN won the opportunity to negotiate the work based on a competitive first stage tender and their performance with Interserve on previous projects.

The programme was challenging and the detailing demanded a high quality approach to the installation."
